Talking about personality is a very important and heavy topic. Personality, as researchers have found, is defined as types and traits. The different between type and trait is that the personality type is fixed while the personality trait is continues. To understand the personality types, Allport and Odbert found that “Over 17,000 words in the dictionary referred to psychological differences between people”, and therefore, personality assortment determined between 2 to 5 types of personality, and almost 16 subtypes. And now, before talking about new and modern personality, we will discuss the way Greeks, before thousands of years, classified personality, and it is important to know that the termed personality as “Humors”. Greeks’ philosophers categorized people in to four categories depending in four bodily fluids. First, the irritable person who’s related to the yellow bile in his body. Second, the depressed one who’s related to his black bile. Third, the optimistic person who’s related to the blood. And finally the calm one who’s related to the phlegm. Later, William ****don classified personality according to the body type. ****don categories were those: 1-Buxom shape (Viscerotonic): He is relaxed, peaceful, and loving. 2-Muscular shape (Somatotonic): He is active and combative. 3-Delicate shape (Carebrotonic): He is quiet and sensitive. Although ****don’s theory about body type and personality was a good one, but it was rarely used in psychology, except in alternative therapies and Eastern psychology. Relating to ****don classification, an Indian medicine, called Anurvedic, people’s types of personality was assorted according to the body type using three terms: Vata, Pita, and Kapha: 1-Vata ( Ectomorph): Unpredictable changes in mood, size, and shape, but he is generally slender with cool and dry skin. 2-Pita (Mesomorph): Mostly predictable, intelligent, passionate, and critical. He is medium built and strong. 3- Kapha (Endomorph): Relaxed and slow in almost everything. He is strong, heavy and could be overweight. Another important classification is the one made by the philosopher and psychologist Jung called Jungain psychological types of personality. This classification is the most used one by psychologists, but still not always included in studying personality. His theory is based on Strengths and Limitation of one’s psychological type. But after all his works, this theory was criticized because in ignores the continues nature of personality traits. Also, the trait theory made us in a way believe that we all possess the same traits but in different ways (the quantity), but this theory claims that people possess different quantities from others, so each one has his own way to possess. Another scholar, Myers-Briggs, developed an exam generally taken by business people to understand their own personality type. In addition, Keirsey improved Jung’s theory about the four types of personalities. He refers to “Temperaments” rather than personality. And here are the four personality traits that Keirsey developed: 1-Extrpvesion E, Introversion I: Means whether you use your energy in the outside world, or you just lock yourself in your own world. 2-Intuition N, Sensing S: Means you depend in your own inner voice or observation. 3-Thinking T, Feeling F: Means whether you depend on your thought of emotions when making a decision. 4-Judgement J, Perception P: Means whether you put a plan in your life, or leave things and see what will happen in the future. And by using the letters above, your personality code will appear. Mayer Friedman, a cardiologist, categorized people in to two categories. Type A personality are those who always busy, anxious, and work-aholics. Type B Personality is those who are relaxed and easy going. One more scientist to talk about in the study of personality, he is Block who identified 5 types of personalities. Mostly, these type were found on intelligent white people, so a subsequent studies were made after Block’s study, and found out that there are only 2 types from what Block had suggested: 1-Well-Adjusted, or Resilient person: Flexible and successful. 2-Overcontrolling and undercontrolling: The fist is hard to deal with and the second one is risky and got involve with unsafe sex and crimes. Those two are maladjusted type.
