What a birthday present! The hottest woman in the Middle East graces our first anniversary NOX with an exclusive interview
Not only does Haifa Wehbe rarely need an introduction, we don’t even feel we actually need a reason to paste her photograph across our anniversary NOX cover – and also a handful spreads here. She doesn’t need to have a new clip out. Or even have to say very much. This is Haifa Wahbe, the single biggest female Arab icon in the last two decades. It might be our birthday, but with those devastating feline features and a stunning ability to generate headlines, she’s a story just because she exists.

A couple of months ago, though, the tabloids might have carried a far bleaker message. When filming a video clip for her song “Hasa if Benna Haga” in Lebanon, a car crash resulted in a stay in hospital – and the brief but very real danger of a potentially catastrophic explosion from which she is still recovering. Right now, there’s even more reason than ever to celebrate her.

NOX: Firstly, we have to ask about your accident. Can you tell
us what happened as you experienced it?
Haifa: It was an accident during the shooting of my new video clip “Hasa Ma Bena Fi Haga”. The video clip shows a helicopter chasing my car... What happened was that the helicopter hit the back of my car and also my head. This resulted in a huge accident that left the car smashed and loads of glass pieces flew in all directions which resulted in puncturing the helicopter’s fuel tank! The fuel spilled all over me and the crew. I think you can imagine the trauma. But thanks to the Lebanese army, my crew and I were saved.

NOX: And thank God for that! People have hinted at changes
in you as a result, but how would you describe yourself?
Haifa: I’m a millennium girl and I belong to an age and time where we are all broad minded and have a modern attitude and style of thinking. I represent a huge section of females who are living in this modern age and I’m constantly being told that they see themselves in me and what I do.

NOX: Interesting. Do you see that modern thinking as wanting equality with guys in this society?
Haifa: True, women of today want equality with men in everything but it should not be like that. I encourage women to be independent and have their own affect in life but to a certain limit because in the end women should be women and men should be men.

NOX: We’ve never agreed with anyone more. So how would Haifa Wehbe, one of the great modern sex symbols, define beauty?
Haifa: Being beautiful is a blessing but I think a person can have a lot of other things that can make them beautiful, such as talent, education, and just being smart in life. It adds to the outside look of beauty.

NOX: When you know that men find you attractive – which you muct surely know they do – how do deal with that day in day out? Do ever want a break from it?
Haifa: No, I feel flattered every time I receive a compliment, and I simply say “Thank you”!

NOX: In that case, we think you’re incredible. But who catches
your eye? Who is your ideal man?
Haifa: He must be independent with a good sense of humor. Good looking with a nice smile and nice teeth!

NOX: Damn. That’s nought out of four. But what about women’s reactions to you… there must be a bit of jealousy?
Haifa: Yes. Sometimes the envy does not hurt if it comes from people who love me and desire to be like me in what I possess – my talent and looks. It is their own way of wishing to be better and that’s fine. The problem is with some people who hold negative feelings towards me simply because they have an issue with me.

NOX: So, you accept there’s a downside to fame?
Haifa: It’s nice to know that whatever you do gets recognised in a big way, because a lot of people love you and care for what you do – especially if you put a lot of hard work and effort into it. However, fame takes from you as much as it gives, I think. It takes away your privacy because you are constantly in the limelight. But I believe it’s good once you learn how to balance it out between the good and the bad that it might bring.

NOX: So, what don’t people know about you – and what would
you like them to see that they might not have already?
Haifa: Let them keep up with me and they will discover that for themselves. It’s much more fun, don’t you think?

What has been the worst thing that has happened to you?
Haifa: Betrayal from someone close that I put my trust into and the jealousy I have been encountering ever since I got into the music business.

NOX: How about the best thing?
Haifa: Being a superstar is the best thing that happened to me!

NOX: And what are your plans to keep you a superstar?
Haifa: Well, there’s a new album, a new record company, new video clips, an album for the kids, there’s my first experience in acting… the list goes on. I have a lot of surprises for my fans. Just wait!
